This variety is grown chiefly in the northern part of Israel. It is a spontaneous mutation of the Washington Navel orange. It originated at Hacienda Cara Cara in Valencia, Venezuela. The rind is deep orange and the colour of the flesh has earned the variety the alternative name of Red Navel.
It is very sweet and juicy, with an aftertaste of cherries.
The deep red hue of this variety is due its higher concentration of lycopene than other oranges, which instead owe their red colour to anthocyanins. Lycopene is an antioxidant that helps reduce the risk of developing various types of cancer and heart disease.
