This variety was defined by Nati in 1674 as “the sweetest and most aromatic of all lemons for grafting, called Citron in the vernacular”.
It was introduced to Florentine Medici gardens at the beginning of the 17th century from the countryside around Pietrasanta (LU) where it seems to have originated.
In 1780 Targioni Tozzetti wrote that among citrons “it is considered the best of all for its pleasant aroma”.
The plant is fairly vigorous with assurgent and rather irregular growth. The branches are thorny, and the young shoots are purplish in colour, while the leaves are oval and elliptic with a dentate margin. The purple flowers grow in clusters. The medium-sized fruits have a long, tapered apex, and the golden yellow rind is puckered and very fragrant.
