This variety was created by Howard B. Frost at the Riverside University, California, in 1927. It is a hybrid resulting from the cross pollination of the King mandarin and Kincy tangerine. The fruit is seedless, easy to peel and varies in size and shape. The flesh is sweet and fragrant. The fruit usually ripens in late winter and early spring. The Pixie mandarin has low acidity and can be used in cooked or raw dishes, both sweet and savoury. It keeps at room temperature but refrigeration is recommended for longer periods.
