The tree is medium-sized, with a spreading, drooping shape, a few small thorns on the younger thin branches, and small, green leaves similar to the mandarin. The flowers are small with bright mauve petals. The fruit is smallish, variable in shape but usually spherical or flattened, and may have a small furrowed pedicel lobe. The orangey-red rind is thin and loosely attached to the flesh, which is orange and very sour with numerous small seeds.
There are various clonal varieties of this plant. The most common of these are. “Rangpur lime” in India, “Japanisce lime” in Java, “Philippine red lime” in the Philippines and “limao cravo” in Brazil. There is also a semi-dwarf version with sweet fruit, used as an ornamental plant: the “Otaheite orange”.
The Rangpur lime is mainly used as a rootstock for orange and mandarin in Brazil, due to its high resistance to the Tristeza virus. The fruit is also used to flavour a well-known English brand of gin.
