The Thompson grapefruit originated as a bud mutation on a Marsh tree in an orchard owned by W. B. Thompson in Oneco, Florida It was the first seedless pigmented selection, discovered by S. A. Collins in 1913, but it did not become available until 1924, when the Royal Palms Nurseries of Oneco started to market it. Due to its seedlessness, the variety was extensively planted in Texas and in several areas of Florida.
The plant is very vigorous, with a rounded growth habit, and can become very large. The leaves are rounded at the base, with alate petiole, and the large flowers grow singly or in small clusters.
The fruit is medium sized, flattened or spherical, and has very smooth and relatively thin rind that is pale yellow when ripe.
The flesh is very juicy with pigmentation particularly accentuated in the centre.
