It has dense foliage with bright, glossy green leaves, and small, green, or sometimes yellow, flowers. The fruit is oval, symmetrical, with a smooth bitterish rind, 2-15cm in length and apple-green, turning orangey-yellow when ripe. The green fruit has white flesh, while the yellow fruit has yellow flesh. The flavour is similar to peach and banana, sometimes more bitterish. It is usually eaten alone or in a fruit salad, served with sugar and cream.
The extract of the seeds, zest and leaves of this plant have beneficial properties for curing anxiety, insomnia and hypertension.
The fruit should be picked a few weeks before it is ripe, to enjoy the flavour to its fullest.
