However Flanders (1932) described it as a gigantic tree encountered in Chinchilla (Lytton Country) with a single trunk of about 50cm in diameter at 2m from the ground, 7-8m high with rounded foliage, over 8.5m in diameter. This tree was very probably rooted in an area with underground water. The leaves are very thick and leathery, normally oblong with obtuse tip, grey hairs on both sides, and a thick cuticle. The very small axillary flowers are arranged individually or in groups of 2-3 on thin stems. The fruit is round or obovoid with small, round juice sacs in short stems. Young plants grow very slowly from seed, until they have developed sufficiently extensive root apparatus. The Australian desert lime can stand severe drought and strong dry winds: in these conditions the leaves fall and the tree resembles a smoke tree. The roots can tolerate high levels of salt and boron. When dormant this species can resist temperatures of -24°C. These features are shared with the kumquat.
