It was grown in the Medici gardens in the 16th century, as recorded by Agostino Del Riccio (1595) who wrote: “the Chinese orange is a small plant like the Spanish myrtle”. It is a fairly small plant with bushy habit, slow-growing and highly productive. It is distinct from all other citrus varieties for its unusual small, leathery, pointed leaves similar to those of the myrtle plant (Myrtus communis L.). It is remontant, flowering mainly in spring and autumn, with abundant small flowers on both the new and older branches, which produces an unusual contrast of colour between the deep green leaves and white flowers, with their sweet, heady fragrance. The highly decorative fruits remains on the plant at length: small, with flattened ends and bright orange when ripe, they usually grow in bunches and have a sour, bitterish flavour. They can also be used for candied peel and refreshing drinks with a slightly bitter flavour. The plant is suitable for cultivation in pots, and is one of the most interesting citrus species to bonsai enthusiasts, due to its slow growth which makes it a dwarf-like variety.
</oembed>
