With the migrations of the Jews, commencing in the 6th century BC, it became the first citrus fruit to be known in Europe. It was probably introduced to Italy as early as the 2nd century B.C., first to Sardinia and Corsica and later to Sicily, Calabria, and Campania. The plant is not very vigorous, with assurgent growth, an irregular canopy, and thorny branches. The leaves are medium-large, oval and oblong, with a dentate margin and short non-alate petiole not articulated with the leaf blade. The new shoots and buds are purplish red and grow prevalently in clusters. The plant flowers mainly in spring and autumn. The fruit is large, sometimes very large, oblong or cylindrical in shape, with very thick, wrinkly, pale yellow rind. After limes, citrons are the most sensitive citrus plants to cold, tending to lose their leaves in winter and grow new ones in spring.
