In Targioni Tozzetti (1853) it is said to have been introduced in the city of Nimes, near Montpellier, in 1808, by a ship’s captain, and that a Citrus hystrix plant was purchased from France by Professor Gaetano Savi in 1825, for the botanical garden in Pisa. The plant shows limited growth with a irregular foliage and short thorns. The dark green leaves have an unusual oval-oblong shape with a winged petiole as large as the leaves. The small, white flowers are fragrant. The fruit is spherical and yellow-green with furrowed rind. The flesh has a very bitter, sour juice.
