It is named after the American explorer Frank N. Meyer, who discovered it near Peking in 1908 and introduced it to the United States. The plant is fairly vigorous, productive, and more resistant to cold than the lemon. It is highly ornamental, with dark green leaves. The shoots and buds are purplish and arranged mainly in clusters. It is remontant and the branches are covered in fruit and flowers all year round. The fruits are oval, like the common lemon, with thin yellowy-orange rind when ripe. They are juicy with a similar flavour to the lemon, though less tart.
