It is one of the “true” citrus species, along with the citron and the mandarin. Its origins are very ancient. In Liguria it is commonly called sciadocco, after Shaddock, the name of the English captain who introduced it to America. The pomelo should not be confused with the grapefruit, as often happens; from which it differs in its young shoots and fruit, which is large, pear-shaped, spherical or flattened, with monoembryonic seeds. It is a very vigorous, thorny plant with angular shoots, and large elliptic-oval leaves with alate petiole. The flowers are large and grow both in clusters and singly.
