It is grown on the island of Procida, using ancient methods and techniques handed down through the generations. It has long been cultivated by the families of the island, but it appears that its large-scale commercial production commenced only after the Second World War. Demand at the time was so high that lemons became more profitable than vines, leading to the destruction of many vineyards to make room for the orchards. Many hectares have now been totally abandoned as cultivation has dwindled. The lemons are very large with exceptionally thick pith known by the islanders as “bread”. The elliptical fruit is medium-large with coarse-grained rind that is pale yellow when fully ripe. The lemons are very fragrant and pleasantly acidulous. Fans of the fruit enjoy eating it in slices, with or without sugar.
</oembed>
