It was introduced to Italy from the Palestine area in the 11th century, probably by the Crusaders. It is a very vigorous, thorny plant with assurgent growth. The leaves are beautiful: dark green with the distinctive alate petiole of Seville orange cultivars. As it is very hardy, it can be grown outdoors without the need for special shelter in climates that are not too harsh. It flowers primarily in spring, producing very fragrant white blossom, similar to that of the sweet orange. The round fruit is slightly flattened at the ends and has rather wrinkled rind. The flesh is bitter and acidic. The fruit turns deep orange in late autumn and holds well on the tree for many months after ripening. It is still used today for marmalade. Seville oranges can also be used as rootstocks and can be reproduced from seed.
</oembed>
