It was introduced commercially in 1945, but has never achieved widespread popularity. The Shambar grapefruit is an old seedless pigmented variety. Its pink flesh closely resembles that of the Redblush (Ruby) cultivar. In suitable conditions Shambar may ripen earlier than Marsh and sometimes has a deeper colour and flavour than Redblush. In a 2008 study of grapefruit varieties suitable for tropical conditions Shambar was found to be among the top four in terms of productivity and fruit colour, along with Rio Red, Ray Ruby, and Redblush. The university of Riverside and others classify it as a grapefruit.
</oembed>
