In 1839 Gallesio wrote that \u201cthe Chinese citron is the largest and most unusual of all citrons. Its rind is bumpy over the entire surface; when ripe it is orange in colour, hence the name, given to it by some, of Orange Citron\u201d. The plant is small to medium, with fairly assurgent growth. The deep green leaves are ovate and fleshy. The purplish buds grow in clusters, and flowering occurs prevalently in spring and autumn. The fruit is very large and seedless, with a pointed apex and thick, very wrinkled rind that is a characteristic deep orange colour when ripe."}
