According to some botanists it could be mandarin x sweet orange hybrid, which is why is also called mandarin orange. It was named clementine in honour of Fr. Clemente Rodier of the farming mission of the Holy Ghost Fathers, who discovered it in 1898 and planted it in the garden of an orphanage in Misserghin near Orano, in Algeria. The tree is vigorous and assurgent with abundant, dense foliage. The leaves are dark green, lanceolate and broader than those of the common mandarin. The fairly small white flowers grow singly or in clusters. The fruit is quite small, spherical and flattened at the ends. The rind is bright orange, fairly thin and separates easily from the juicy, sweet, orange flesh, with few or no seeds. The clementine is an early ripener (October-November) and more cold-hardy than the mandarin. Fruit bearing may be irregular, affected both by temperature variations during fruit-setting and by partial self-sterility. The latter problem may be avoided by cross-pollination with other citrus species, also by intercropping."}
