The leaves are broadly lanceolate, and the stem has cuneiform wings with a dentate blade. The fruit is round, 6.5cm in diameter, with a broad pedicel lobe, smooth surface and pale yellow colour. There are 10-12 segments of flesh with little juice, and 1-2 long, thin and wrinkled seeds each. This species was discovered by Padre Mountrouzier on the island of Arte, a few miles from New Caledonia. It is widespread in Thailand, Indochina, the Philippines, New Guinea, New Caledonia and Polynesia. The fruit is used by indigenous peoples to wash their hair and instead of soap for washing clothes. The leaves, crushed with water, create abundant foam, also used as soap."}
