The grapefruit is probably a natural hybrid of the pomelo and the sweet orange, or possibly a mutation of the pomelo. It is originally from the island of Barbados, in the Antilles, and is the only citrus fruit that did not originate in Asia. It was introduced to the Mediterranean area in the early 19th century. In English-speaking countries, it is known as \u201cgrapefruit\u201d, possibly because the fruits grow mainly in clusters. It is a vigorous plant with smooth shoots and large, oval leaves with a rounded tip and alate petiole. The large, white flowers usually grow in clusters or singly.
