The Gargano orange has been known outside its region of origin since ancient times, as it was at the centre of the region\u2019s trade with Venice and was exported to other European countries and America.
\nIt was mentioned by several authors, including Gabriele d\u2019Annunzio (1863\u20131938). The Gargano orange, awarded PGI status in 2007, is grown on the coastal strip of the Gargano promontory, in the municipalities of Vico del Gargano, Ischitella, and Rodi.
\nThe \u201cCommon Blonde\u201d or \u201cGargano Blonde\u201d is a deep golden yellow, with fairly thin rind, and a minimum diameter of 60 mm. The fruit ripens between April and August, and remains sweet and juicy until the end of September, which allowed it to be shipped for 30\u201340 days.
\nProduction is limited, no more than 30 tons per hectare for the Common Gargano Blonde variety and 25 tons for the Gargano Duretta.
\nThe orange can be consumed raw, in segments or in juices, in salads, or as a garnish. It can also be used in the preparation of sophisticated sweet-and-sour dishes, drinks, liqueurs, and candied fruit.<\/p>\n
