The Bittersweet group of oranges contains no more than two varieties, which differ from the other sour oranges in their lower acidity and better flavour. Formerly thought to be a hybrid of the sweet and sour oranges, it is now believed to have originated as a mutation from the latter. It appears to be the fruit described by Risso and Poiteau (1818\u201322, p. 101) as the sweet-fruited bitter orange of the Mediterranean basin. It seems likely that the Spanish took it to Florida and South America. The fruit is smaller, paler, and smoother than that of the sour orange.
