The tree shows medium growth with abundant outward spreading and drooping habit. It is almost completely thornless. The leaves are bright green, medium sized with winged petiole. The new buds and flowers show a slightly purplish hue. The fruit is fairly small (like a small lemon), oval or obovoid, usually with a rounded base which sometimes has a small lobe. The top is fairly round with a small nipple. The rind is smooth, thin and adherent to the flesh which is pale yellow when ripe. The central pith column is thick and the seedless greeny-yellow flesh is very juicy and sourer than the common lemon, with a distinctive lime fragrance. This is a reflowering variety, as cold-hardy as the lemon.
\nThe origin of the Tahiti lime is unknown but it was given the name in California because it was imported there from the island between 1850 and 1880. We do know the origin of the name Persian lime. H. Chapot encountered a lime called Sakhesi on the island of Djerba (Tunisia) where it had been grown for centuries, identical to the one described above.
