The variety seems to have originated in Japan where it has been known for about 300-400 years. It has been recorded in Italy since the late 19th century but has never been widely grown.
\nThe fairly small, productive tree is slow-growing with a spreading, sometimes drooping habit. It is cold-hardy with large, elliptic, dark green leaves with a pointed tip and produces quite small flowers in spring, growing singly or in clusters.
\nThe fruit is quite large, spherical and flattened at either end, with thin, orange rind that peels easily from the very juicy, seedless flesh.
\nThe fruit ripens early, in October-November, and is ripe inside before the rind fully changes colour. If the fruit is not picked the rind tends to detach from the flesh and swell up to the size of an orange, remaining on the tree for several months.<\/p>\n
