Originally from northern and central China, this is the only deciduous citrus and is cold-hardy. It is medium sized and thorny with irregular, bushy habit. The deciduous leaves are trifoliate, ie. consisting of three small leaves with the largest in the centre. The largeish flowers grow singly and the fruit is small, spherical, yellow when ripe, with an unpleasant flavour.
\nThis is a decorative plant also suitable for creating thick hedges, thanks to its long thorns and abundant, well-developed branches. It can be reproduced from seed.
