Caulonia Blond Orange

This Orange is known locally as the Thorn Blonde orange due to the presence of thorns along the branches. The fruits are of high caliber, oval-subround in shape with a yellow-orange epicarp that easily detaches from the pulp; the base of the pommel is slightly concave while the apex is characterized by the “navel or navel”: it is in fact the inclusion of a second and smaller fruit, more or less developed inside the first (syncarpy). Ovate leaf slightly pointed and winged. It is a late orange that begins the maturation in the second ten days of March and lasts until May, ensuring high productivity.
It is difficult to establish at what time the introduction of the Caulonia orange tree appears: it can be hypothesized that orange groves have been made since the 19th century. In the nineties of the last century, the surface area used in cultivation reached approximately eighteen hundred hectares. The
fruit was and is highly appreciated and used mainly for fresh consumption. The area concerned with the crop extends into the town of Caulonia, from which it takes its name, and into the neighbouring district of Locride; in recent years, the Biondo has been the subject of revaluation by local cooperatives.
