This variety was first described by Risso in 1818, who said that the Commendatore’s pear was still unknown in Italy, and that the most beautiful example of this citrus tree in Paris belonged to M. Huard, and was about 25 years old.
The tree is vigorous with rounded-spreading habit and assurgent growth. The large lanceolate leaves have a slightly dentate edge and winged petiole. The large, fragrant flowers grown mainly in clusters. The fruit is large, pear-shaped and decorative, with smooth rind, often a greenish-yellow colour. The flesh is greenish with little juice or flavour.
Through analysis of the genotypes of the Adam’s apple and the French lime, and using molecular markers, project group at the Istituto di Coltivazioni Arboree at the University of Catania, consisting of Zi Niu Deng, Alessandro Gentile, Elisabetta Nicolosi, Giovanni Continella and Eugenio Tribulato, has managed to trace the parents of these two hybrids, which are both descendents of the pomelo, citron and lemon.
