The botanist Giorgio Gallesio described the Brescia area as the “richest in fruit of those we have covered” (published posthumously in 1994, ed. E. Baldini, Giornali dei viaggi). The Madernino lemon started to be grown outdoors in the area from Limone sul Garda to Gragnano and Gardone Riviera on the north-west shore of Lake Garda in the 13th century, and was protected during cold spells by the typical lemon-houses heated by braziers. The fruit was exported all over northern Europe and used chiefly by noble families and apothecaries.
The highly acidic fruit is smaller than other varieties. It is roundish and very juicy, with almost smooth, thin rind.
