Nome botanico in latino: C. limon “massese”
Disponibile mezzo fusto o cespuglio
Vaso di diametro 20 o 22 cm
The cultivation of citrus fruit on the hills around Massa Carrara dates from the mid-14th century, and subsequently became widespread around 1500, when the most planted varieties were citrons, oranges, and lemons. There was a veritable boom in production during the 17th century.
The favourable hillside site, sheltered from the north wind and warmed by the influence of the sea, still produces varieties such as the Massese lemon, destined almost exclusively for local consumption.
The average-sized, rounded fruit have very thin rind, a bittersweet flavour, and keep very well after harvesting. Today there are approximately 15 main producers of Massese lemons, each with an average of 50–60 trees. They have formed a growers’ group based in Castagnetola, where a lemon festival is held during the first week of July.
