This orange was already grown in the Medici collections in the 16th century, and was referred to by Bimbi as the Arancio virgolaro, bello e nuovo (“beautiful new Virgolaro orange”).
In 1595, Agostino Del Riccio described the fruit as reminding him of the green and yellow colour of the uniform of the Lanzichenecchi, the German mercenary soldiers who were the bodyguards of the Medici family in Florence.
It was also called the Swiss orange because the yellow-orange stripes of the ripe fruit recalled the breeches worn by the Swiss Guard. The fairly vigorous plant differs from the common Seville orange in its fruit, which is medium-sized, with longitudinal stripes and green and yellow or yellowy-orange protuberances when ripe. The leaves are also partly variegated. It is a very interesting plant from an ornamental point of view.
